    The Western Health & Social Care Trust (WHSCT) is based in Northern Ireland and consists of several hospitals including Altnagelvin Area Hospital and South West Acute Hospital, both of which enjoy teaching hospital status.

    About the trust

    Altnagelvin Area Hospital is an Acute Hospital and is situated on the outskirts of Londonderry in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is the largest district hospital in Northern Ireland and has the widest range of medical and surgical services outside of the city of Belfast. It has 472 inpatient beds and 36 day case beds on the site. It covers specialities including Trauma and Orthopaedics, Oral & Maxillo-Facial surgery and Ophthalmology in addition to the usual district general hospital specialities.  It has a 24-hour Accident and Emergency Department and is one of Northern Ireland’s five designated Cancer Units. It is also the trauma unit for the Western part of the province.  

    The South West Acute Hospital is located in Enniskillen, the County town of County Fermanagh, in an area of outstanding natural beauty that is often described as ‘Northern Ireland’s Lake District’. The South West Acute Hospital, which opened in June 2012, is a new district general hospital with up to 312 inpatient and day case beds. It provides services to a widely dispersed population in a predominantly rural area.

    It provides services in emergency medicine, acute medicine, general internal medicine, gastroenterology, cardiology, endocrinology and diabetology, respiratory medicine, geriatric medicine, stroke medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric medicine, general surgery and critical care. It has 24/7 biochemistry, haematology and blood bank services and radiology services including x-ray and ultrasound, CT and MRI scanning.
